Professor Lam Hon-Ming is a global pioneer in soybean genomic and genetic research. As Director of the State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology and the Centre for Soybean Research, his work focuses on enhancing soybean resilience to address food security and sustainable agriculture. Lam’s groundbreaking studies, including decoding the genomes of 31 wild and cultivated soybeans in 2010 and completing the world’s first reference-grade wild soybean genome in 2019, revealed the genetic diversity of wild soybeans, enabling the development of stress-tolerant varieties. His non-transgenic approaches have led to salt- and drought-tolerant soybean cultivars, such as Longhuang No. 1-3, successfully cultivated in Gansu, China. Through international collaborations and initiatives like STEAM@Soybean, Lam’s research bridges laboratory innovation with practical applications, promoting climate-smart agriculture and global soybean improvement.
